Several hundred Mid-Atlantic region triathletes were among
the more than 1,750 participants at the HSBC Ironman USA Lake Placid Triathlon
held on Sunday, July 28
th.
Canada’s Heather Fuhr claimed her third title in four years
in the women’s race. Fuhr, who claimed the 12th Ironman title of her career,
posted an overall time of nine hours, 43 minutes and 12 seconds, more than 13
minutes faster than second-place finisher Joanna Lawn of New Zealand.
Fuhr overcame a spirited effort by age-grouper Jackie Hatherly (Lake Placid,
NY) passing Hatherly on the run and then coasting to the win.
Fuhr now stands second overall in all-time Ironman wins with 12, trailing only
Ironman legend Paula Newby-Fraser who has won 23 Ironman events in her career.
Hatherly led the women’s race throughout the swim and bike portions of the
event, before finally being overtaken by Fuhr and then Lawn on the run.
Hatherly’s time of 10:11:37 smashed her own age-group record for women 35-39 by
more than 20 minutes.
Karen Holloway (Richmond. Va.) was the top female finisher from the region,
finishing fourth overall with a time of 10:12:35, while Amy Farrell (Lake
Placid, NY) finished fifth in 10:13:29.
The men’s race featured a dominant performance by Ryan Bolton (Boulder, Colo.)
who claimed his first Ironman title.
Bolton, who finished second at last year’s Lake Placid event, registered a time
of 8:39:19 in only the third Ironman event of his career. Bolton broke his own
course run record by posting a marathon time of 2:49:14. Bolton stood seventh
after the swim, but made up time on the bike and led the rest of the way in
claiming the title.
Estonia’s Kirill Litovtchenko finished second (8:53:50), with Shingo Tani of
Japan third (9:01:46). Eduardo Sturla of Argentina was fourth (9:11:30). Jamey Yon (Charlotte, N.C.), who finished
second at the Lake Placid event back in 2000, was the top male finisher from
the Mid-Atlantic region, finishing
fifth overall (9:14:42).
In addition to the stellar performances of Holloway and Yon in the professional
division, sixteen age-group athletes from the region received trophies at the
post-race awards banquet for their top-five finishes.
