Final preparations are underway for the inaugural Delaware
Diamondman Triathlon to be held on Sunday, September 8, 2002 just outside of
Wilmington, Del. This USAT-sanctioned,
1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run is the first half-iron distance
race to be held in the State of Delaware and is being produced by Piranha
Sports, LLC. Piranha Sports also
produces the popular Escape From Fort Delaware Triathlon (named one of the top
40 triathlons in the United States) and Lums Pond Triathlon & Duathlon (to
be held on September 29
th).
Participants
will swim in the crystal clear waters of Lums Pond. Lums Pond is actually more like a lake in that it is 7.5 mile
walk around the perimeter. According to
race director Neil Semmel, the water quality in Lums Pond is tested weekly by
the State of Delaware and has always been found to be suitable for swimming and
recreational activities.
The
Diamondman bike course is flat and fast and traverses through the rural
countryside and historic towns of Delaware.
The half-marathon run is a shaded, cross country route around Lums Pond.
The
timing of Diamondman on the Sunday after Labor Day will make it a great tune-up
race for Mid-Atlantic members training for Ironman Hawaii, The Great Floridian
and Ironman Florida as well as a great end-of-season race for those who wish to
test their end-of-summer fitness with a longer distance effort.
