The 2
nd Annual Escape from Fort Delaware
Triathlon attracted over 300 eager triathletes to Delaware City, Del. on June 8
th
to compete in this unique event, recently named one of the top 40
triathlons/duathlons in the United States by Gatorade.
The race started off with triathletes being transported by
ferry across the Delaware River to Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island. From there, the “escapees”, marched through
a Civil War Soldiers’ arch before entering the water for the cannon start. The triathletes exited the water via a
custom made swim ramp and began the scenic bike leg along the Delaware River
and surrounding wetlands. The run
portion ended up in the beautiful historic section of Delaware City. The Snap, one of Delaware’s top local bands,
performed during the post-race party and awards ceremony.
Overall male winner, Matthew Stephens (Bloomsburg, Pa.)
cruised in at 2:01:05. Overall female
winner, Bianca Simpson (Waterford, NJ) cruised in at 2:12:23. Among the masters, Stacy Karwacki (Baltimore,
Md.) and Richard Brokaw (Bel Air, Md.) won their divisions easily. The top Athena was Casie Brinton (Newark,
Del.) with a time of 2:43:12 and the top Clydesdale was 47 year local favorite,
Paul Schlosser, Jr. (Newark, Del.) with a time of 2:14:47 which was almost a
full 6 minutes ahead of his age group winning category!
