STRONG REGIONAL SHOWING AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER
Athletes from the Mid-Atlantic region took two of the top ten spots in both the men’s and women’s divisions of Mrs. T’s USAT Age Group World Championship Qualifier held June 15th in Lake Placid, New York.
 
Approximately 650 athletes braved temperatures in the 50’s along with wind and rain to compete for slots on Team USA which will compete at the 2002 ITU World Triathlon Championship on November 9th and 10th in Cancun, Mexico.
 
David Thompson (Appleton, Minn.) and Amanda Gillam (Boulder, Colo.) were the overall men’s and women’s winners.  Thompson completed the challenging Olympic-distance course in 2 hours, 1 minute and 11 seconds.  Gillam crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 13 minutes and 22 seconds.
 
The top finisher from the Mid-Atlantic region was Michael Orton (Reston, VA), in a time of 2 hours, two minutes and 18 seconds.  Orton finished third overall in the race.  Timothy O’Donnell (Annapolis, MD) also finished in the top ten in the men’s race, placing ninth overall in a time of 2 hours, 4 minutes and 5 seconds.
 
Margaret Shapiro (Annandale, Va.) was the top female finisher from the region, placing seventh overall in a time of 2 hours, 19 minutes and 9 seconds.  Andrea Dvorak (McLean, Va,) finished ninth overall in two hours, 19 minutes and 52 seconds.
