REGIONAL CLUBS COMPETE IN THE INAUGURAL MIDATLANTIC CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP AT COLUMBIA
by Andrew Southerling

Six triathlon clubs and over 90 club racers from the Mid-Atlantic Region competed at the inaugural club championship hosted on May 19th at the Columbia Triathlon, in Columbia, Md.  These clubs included the AABC Multisport Club, Baltimore Area Triathlon Club, Downingtown Triathlon Cub, Guy’s Multisport Club, Old Dominion Triathlon Club, and the US Navy Triathlon Club.

The overall club team winners were the Baltimore Area Triathlon Club, AABC Multisport Club and Guy’s Multisport Club claiming the top three spots respectively.  Old Dominion Triathlon Club placed fourth among the clubs, followed by Downingtown Triathlon Club in fifth place, and finally the US Navy TC.

Tim Kitching and Otho Keller of the Baltimore Area Triathlon Club posted the fastest overall times among the club male racers.  Christy Underdonk of AABC Multisport and Holly Kenney of the Baltimore Area TC posted the quickest times among the female club racers.

The scoring format adopted by the region for this event was similar to that used by the Collegiate Triathlon Association.  To be eligible for awards, clubs were required to submit a coed roster consisting of at least five racers - three male and two female. The top three male and top two female racers for each club were eligible to score, with the winning club having the lowest cumulative time among their eligible male and female racers.  Awards were presented to the three club teams having the lowest cumulative scores as well as the fastest two individual male and female racers among all the clubs.

The Mid-Atlantic Region currently is exploring alternative club scoring systems, including those adopted by other regions and the National Club Championship Scoring System to be used at the National Club Championship in Boulder, Colorado this August.
