Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Triathlon News
by James Fazio

Mid-Atlantic collegiate teams have been very busy during the past couple of weeks.  April 20th marked the first time in history that the Collegiate Triathlon National Championship was held as a stand-alone event.  The Olympic distance race was held in Memphis, TN and attracted approximately 550 collegiate athletes from around the country.  Several teams and individuals from the region turned in stellar performances.

The United States Naval Academy men’s team took top honors placing their top three men in the lowest cumulative time of any school.  Congratulations Navy!  The University of North Carolina’s women had a cumulative time that ranked them fifth in the nation.  Great job ladies!  The total team results (men and woman combined) placed University of North Carolina fifth overall in the nation.  Rounding out the Mid-Atlantic combined teams placed the Naval Academy seventh, Virginia Tech eleventh, and Penn State seventeenth in the nation. The University of Colorado at Boulder won the combined team competition.  Top individual honor in the region went to Daniel Peairs of Virginia Tech for his 3rd place overall finish and Timothy O'Donnell and William Uffman of Navy, 6th and 9th place respectively.  Top female in the region was Monica Kornichuk of University of North Carolina, finishing in 13th place.  Complete results can be found at http://www.collegiatetri.org.

The following weekend, Appalachian State University in beautiful Boone, North Carolina held their annual sprint distance race, the Blue Ridge Triathlon (formerly OASIS Triathlon).  Top female collegiate athletes were Sarah Primeau of Appalachian State University, Rebecca Moore of James Madison University and Joanne Fitzpatrick of James Madison University.  Top men at the end of the day were Colin Deschamps of James Madison University, Mathew Thompson of James Madison University, and Cody Cox of Berea College.  Full results for this race can be found at http://www.set-upinc.com.

ATTENTION ALUMNI!!!! These teams need your help.  Remember what it was like to be in college?  You were poor, starving, and of course you wished you had had a triathlon team.  Now they exist, and they need your help.  The biggest limitation for collegiate triathlon teams is money.  Most teams receive very little, if any, money from their schools.  All race fees and travel expenses fall on the athletes.  Help these young athletes compete and possibly make the next Olympic team.  Contact your alma mater today and inquire about making a gift to the school’s triathlon club or team.
