TRIATHLON LONG DISTANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD IN NICE, FRANCE

2002 Long Course World Championship The ITU Long Distance World Championships were held on September 22, 2002 at the 21st annual Nice Triathlon. Eighty-six American athletes traveled to Nice, France to represent the United States as part of Team USA. Team USA had a strong showing in the women's race, with Susan Williams placing fourth in the Elite Women's Division, and Megan Fix (Stanford, Calif.) placing third in the Women's Age Group Division. The American men also fared well, with Michael Lovato placing 33rd in the Men's Elite Division, and Darrin Rohr (Alamo, Calif.) placing 18th in the Men's Age Group Division. The overall winners of the race were Cyril Neveu of France, with a time of 6:19:45, and Estedt Ines of Germany, with a time of 7:06:43. The top male finisher from the Mid-Atlantic region was Bill Hauser (Malvern, Pa.) with a time of 7:36:45. Ruth Monnig (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was the top female age-grouper from the region, finishing with a time of 8:52.53.

NAVY MEN AND ARMY WOMEN CAPTURE MID-ATLANTIC COLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIP CROWNS

2002 Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Championship On Saturday September 21st, collegiate teams from around the region were back in action at the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Championship race which is part of the Outback Big Lick Triathlon. Over 100 collegiate athletes awoke to a picturesque morning at Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Virginia. For the second year in a row The United States Naval Academy’s men dominated the race placing their top five men in the top 8 overall. The women’s title was taken by ARMY’s women’s team.
