NEW USAT PRESIDENT HAILS FROM MID-ATLANTIC REGION: RAY PLOTECIA ELECTED TO HEAD NATIONAL TRIATHLON FEDERATION
Ray Plotecia, a long-time triathlete and both regional and national triathlon federation official in February was elected president of triathlon’s national governing body, USA Triathlon. Plotecia, from Towson, MD, has had a distinguished career in triathlon and has raced at every distance from the sprint to the Ironman while also contributing to the administrative end of the sport.

BADMANN, ZEIGER TO DUEL AT BLACKWATER EAGLEMAN
Three-time Hawaii Ironman Champion Natasha Badmann and
Baltimore’s own Dr. Joanna Zeiger, 4th place women's finisher at the 2000
Sydney Olympic Games, will go head to head at this year’s Blackwater EagleMan
Triathlon, to be held on June 9 th in Cambridge, MD. Defending EagleMan Champion, Andrea Fisher
from Austin, TX will again be racing this year. This will be the strongest elite
field in Eagleman’s long, storied history. Insiders tell The Mid-Atlantic
Monthly that race management is currently in hot pursuit of 2001 Hawaii Ironman

USA TRIATHLON ANNOUNCES DRAFT-LEGAL SERIES FOR JUNIORS
USA Triathlon has announced that it will stage a draft-legal, four-race national triathlon series for juniors and under-23’s this year. The races, for triathletes ages16 to 23, will be held June 30 in San Antonio, Fl., July 20 in Traverse City, Mich. and Aug. 3-4 in Troutdale, Ore. A national championship and world championship qualifier will be held Sept. 21-22 in Bristol, NH. The New Hampshire race will qualify three 16-19-year-olds in each gender, and three of each gender in the 23-under category. The 16-19-year-olds race will be the sprint distance, while the under-23s will race the Olympic distance. Athletes who are 18 and 19 can choose either the sprint or Olympic distance race.
