More than 15 million Toyota Camry models have been sold worldwide thanks to the car’s outstanding value and legendary reliability. For the past nine years, the Toyota Camry has been the best selling car in America, and to help ensure this trend of sales success continues, the Toyota Camry is all-new for 2012.
Boasting a bigger interior, quieter ride and more eye-catching design, along with class-leading safety, fuel economy and technology, the seventh-generation 2012 Toyota Camry (MSRP $22,055) is considered by many industry experts to be the best Camry ever made.
The front-wheel drive 2012 Toyota Camry is available in four trim levels to fit a variety of budgets and driving needs. Buyers can opt for the entry-level L, the value-packed LE, the sporty SE (the $23,220 MSRP of the SE is $745 less than last year’s model) or the premium XLE. (There is also a premium Camry Hybrid, with up to 43 city mpg, that will be the topic of a future article.)
Two powerful and fuel-efficient gasoline engine choices are offered – a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter V6 (SE and XLE models). The four-cylinder with Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) perfectly blends power with efficiency, featuring 178 hp and 170 lb/ft of torque while returning an outstanding 35 mpg highway.
For more power, the DOHC 3.5-liter V6 offers up a robust 268 hp and 248 lb/ft of torque while returning 30 mpg highway, the best fuel economy of any current V6 sedan.
Both engines come with a highly efficient electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) and sequential manual shift mode. The sportier Camry SE model features an exclusive “D range” manual shift mode with integrated paddle shifters on the steering wheel. An “S” mode produces even faster shifting and downshift throttle blip control typically found in sports cars.
A new, more aerodynamic body structure with redesigned suspension helps the Camry handle better than any of its predecessors, rewarding drivers with straight line stability, steering responsiveness and superior ride quality. Greater use of high tensile steel helps the Camry resist flex and twist in corners, and makes it lighter and stronger than previous designs.
SE models receive exclusive enhancements like lighter and stiffer lower front control arms, special steering knuckles, a more responsive Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system and specially tuned springs and shock absorbers for superior back-road athleticism.
On the outside, the 2012 Camry communicates a modern, sporting form through a wider and lower stance, more defined rocker panel molding and crisp lines, making it look as athletic as it drives. LE and XLE models feature tasteful exterior chrome trim while the SE model sports an exclusive three-part grille, more prominent rocker panels and an integrated trunklid spoiler.
Inside, the 2012 Camry welcomes occupants with a new cabin that puts an emphasis on quality, refinement, comfort and outward visibility. A new dashboard, revised seat locations and lower-profile door, headliner and pillar panels all add to the feeling of added interior space. Even backseat passengers benefit, with a full two inches more middle-seat legroom.
Adding to the feeling of quality and refinement, the 2012 Toyota Camry boasts one of the quietest rides of any car in the midsize segment. New sound absorption materials were placed in critical areas to suppress noises near the frequency of human speech, while foam silencers are used in the dashboard area to eliminate resonance and vibration.
Premium, soft-touch materials, stitched instrument panel trim and leather upholstery (standard on XLE V6) add a touch of luxury, while the redesigned seats with longer seat cushions and higher seatbacks make even the longest road trips feel like a cross-town cruise. SE models feature black-on-black cloth upholstery with more bolstered front seats and an exclusive three-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, for a more engaged driving experience.
Dashboard controls are intuitive, and a sliding center console door allows either front-seat passenger to easily access the hidden 12-volt outlet and USB inputs for iPods and other multimedia devices.
Speaking of multimedia, the 2012 Toyota Camry is designed to keep all occupants safely connected at all times. BLU Logic® Hands Free System is standard, as is a USB port that allows control of all devices through the vehicle sound system, and the 2012 Toyota Camry also offers the available, Toyota-exclusive Entune™ multimedia system.
Entune™ uses a compatible smartphone to deliver integrated and voice-controlled access to navigation, entertainment and information services like live weather, traffic, fuel prices, stocks and sports. Entune even integrates with mobile apps like Bing, Pandora Internet Radio and MovieTickets.com. Entune also helps reduce driver distraction by featuring voice-controlled text message reading and automatic response.
Every 2012 Toyota Camry comes standard with the Toyota STAR Safety System™ featuring 10 airbags, Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-Lock Braking System, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution, Brake Assist and Smart Stop Technology.
The STAR Safety System, combined with the redesigned high-tensile steel-reinforced body structure, earned the 2012 Camry the prestigious Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) “2012 Top Safety Pick” for class-leading crash safety performance.
The Toyota Camry has provided American car buyers with superior value, class-leading safety and legendary reliability for nearly 30 years.
