EDITORIAL: Tourism, A "Preferred" Industry
|
In this issue, Editor-in-Chief Don Holecek talks about Michigan's need to strive for long term competitive advantage in an increasingly global economy. He speculates that because tourism is one of the state's growth industries, jobs offered by this industry will likely fit the "quality" standards sought in a "preferred" industry in the future.

Final Reminder About Listening Sessions
|
With the assistance and support of Michigan State University and Travel Michigan, a planning council comprised of over 75 Michigan tourism industry organizations has been formed to work on developing the first-ever strategic plan to help guide the industry into the future. In May, the council convened and identified several major issue areas that the plan should address and work teams have been organized around each of the areas to do a more in-depth analysis. Each team will develop potential strategies to overcome barriers or capitalize on opportunities identified within each issue area. Information compiled by the teams will then be brought together to create the strategic plan, which will be presented to the industry during the Driving Tourism 2007 Conference, March 26-27 at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.
As part of the planning process, during the month of July, several "listening sessions" will be held around the state. These sessions provide an opportunity for tourism industry stakeholders to learn firsthand about the project and provide feedback. Upcoming sessions are: Battle Creek (07/10/06), Dearborn (07/12/06), Frankenmuth (07/13/06), Traverse City (07/19/06) and Alpena (07/20/06). The sessions are free of charge and open to all industry stakeholders. For more information and session details, visit: www.tourismcenter.msu.edu/plan or go the the Special Announcement that appeared the last issue of this newsletter.
