EDITORIAL: Progress Report #1

In this issue, Editor-in-Chief Don Holecek takes a look back at how Michigan's tourism industry fared in 2005 and tries to explain which variables likely had the most impact on it's performance.  He discusses the impacts of weather conditions, higher gasoline prices, the state's investment in tourism promotion, and the region's economy.

His conclusion is that 2005 was no better for the tourism industry as a whole than 2004 was, and says that Michigan's tourism industry cannot expect that a "hunker down until the auto industry rebounds" coping strategy will be as effective as it has been in the past.  However, he believes that Michigan's tourism industry has the potential to lead the Michigan economy back to health.

But he suggests that in order to be successful at this "will require the coordinated efforts of everyone associated with the industry."  And he suggests that we need a plan to focus our efforts.  To this end, a team of MSU and Travel Michigan personnel has been formed to facilitate development of a coordinated development plan BY Michigan's tourism industry FOR Michigan's tourism industry.  To learn how you can contribute to the planning effort...

MSUE/MAES Survey
If tourism is important to you and your family or business, here’s your chance to tell MSU!

For the first time the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES) and MSU Extension (MSUE) are working together to ask Michigan residents to help identify the issues and opportunities for MAES research and MSUE educational programming during the years ahead. The results of this process will shape the direction for relevant, research-based educational programming to address local issues. It will also guide state-level decisions for research priorities and program support and provide a framework for a federal plan of work.

How can you get involved? Simply click here to take a short survey that will give you an opportunity to prioritize the issues that are of greatest concern to you, your family and your community. Encourage your friends, neighbors, family members and others to also complete the questionnaire.

Do you have questions? Click here or contact your MSU Extension county director.
