HOW ARE WE DOING?

This month Editor-in-Chief, Don Holecek, takes a close look at how Michigan's tourism industry is doing and shares a few relevant findings from recent Travel Industry Association of America publications.  He also discusses whether what we invest in promotion really matters.  This may be his most interesting editorial to-date and is a must-read for anyone running a tourism business or working in the state legislature.

NEW! - TRAVEL & TOURISM SATELLITE ACCOUNTS

On September 8, 2004, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, issued a news release titled, “BEA Reports Total Tourism-related Sales Grew 5.3 Percent in Second Quarter 2004.” View the release at www.bea.gov/bea/newsrel/tournewsrelease.htm.

According to the news release, “Total tourism-related sales of goods and services is the key indicator of the travel and tourism satellite accounts (TTSAs) now being used. Today’s figure includes, for the first time, estimates of the sales of goods and services to visitors from all industries, instead of the sales from tourism industries only. As a result, this indicator better targets the TTSAs by providing more information on what travelers are purchasing.  Estimates of tourism-related employment are also presented for the first time. With this release of the TTSAs, BEA has completed an important step in improving the accuracy of its industry data.”

U.S.A. MARKETING IN THE UK
The U.S. Government is launching its first-ever fully integrated marketing campaign in the United Kingdom, Unmissable Spectacular America, with a backing of $6 million. This campaign aims to drive tourism from the UK to the U.S. and will include advertising, public relations and co-operative marketing components. This exciting campaign is currently in development and the advertising will launch in late 2004, capturing its target audience in the peak holiday buying period.  Promotional co-op packages are available for all budget levels, ranging from $500 to $250,000. To learn more about this opportunity visit www.ustourismcoop.com/index.asp.

A TOURISM MARKETING OPPORTUNITY

There is now a Southwest Michigan Business & Tourism Directory online, which touts: "From accommodations to yacht clubs, Southwest Michigan has much to offer."  This Directory’s website has had well over 3,000,000 "hits" during the past twelve months and is growing, and it’s goals are to encourage residents to shop locally and tourists to patronize Southwest Michigan—while at the same time making it more cost effective to do business in the region.
