1ST MICHIGAN TOURISM INVESTMENT FORUM
The Tourism Resource Center and the School of Hospitality Business at MSU are organizing the first ever Michigan Tourism Investment Forum. It will be held at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn on May 26 and 27, 2004 immediately following the Michigan Hotel, Motel and Resort Association’s Annual Conference. The objective of the forum is to bring all those interested in tourism investment together in one place at one time “to make deals.” Participants will include bankers, developers, operators, planners, designers, regulators, destination marketers, economic development offices, consultants and others who play roles in the development and expansion of tourism facilities and services. The program will include educational sessions, exhibits, and ample opportunities to network. Forum planners are currently beginning to identify prospective sponsors, participants, speakers, and exhibitors. Please contact Alex Nikoloff by e-mail or phone 517-353-0793 if you have suggestions for the forum organizers. Further information will be available on our website as the forum program develops.

ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF BOATING IN MICHIGAN
A recent study conducted by the Recreational Marine Research Center at Michigan State University recently found that, in 2002, approximately 1.1 million watercraft were registered in Michigan, and more than 3 million Michigan residents participated in recreational boating activities. Registered boat owners logged more than 22 million boating days in 2002, and spending by recreational boaters in 2002 was estimated to be $2.24 billion, including $880 million in boat sales, $502 million in annual craft spending, and $860 million on boating trips. This spending generated $636 million in income to business owners and employees and produced a total of 24,000 Michigan jobs.
