2004 TRAVEL OUTLOOK

Editor-in-Chief, Don Holecek, recently returned from TIA's annual Travel Marketing Outlook Forum in Austin, Texas.  Hence, he's chosen to focus this month's editorial on the key issue discussed at that conference: prospects for the U.S. travel industry in 2004.  He reviews attractive market niches, trends, and a forecast for the economy and the U.S. travel industry in the upcoming year.

URGENT REQUEST!
As severe state budget reductions loom, critical Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) and Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES) research and education programs, many vital to Michigan's Tourism Industry, face an uncertain future.  In the next few days, Governor Granholm will present her budget reduction plans to the legislature, and, shortly thereafter, final decisions will be hammered out.  Jeff Armstrong, CANR Dean; Maggie Bethel, MSUE Director;and Ian Gray, MAES Director, seek your help in communicating to your legislators the dire consequences these budget reductions would have for your (and associated) industries.  For more detailed information on MAES and MSUE programs and suggestions for making legislative contacts, please go to the MSUE web site, http://www.msue.msu.edu/home/

HEARD AROUND THE STATE

Beginning in this issue, Michigan Tourism Business will be featuring a new column, called "Heard Around the State" to recognize the many achievements of, and awards given to, individuals and organizations within Michigan's tourism industry.  Please join us in congratulating those who have recently received recognition.  And be sure to send us items to publish here in future issues.
