MICHIGAN AT THE MILLENNIUM
A new book MICHIGAN at the Millennium has just been released by the Michigan State University Press.  Of special interest to you may be Chapter 22: Travel, Tourism, and Recreation in Michigan.  This chapter investigates: why the state should care about tourism, the national and international scope of tourism, the Michigan tourism system, the geography of Michigan tourism, tourism expenditure in Michigan, accommodations used by Michigan tourists, what tourists do on their Michigan pleasure trips, tourism across the seasons of the year, tourism trends in Michigan, advertising and promotion, and what can and should be done to address the state's significant trade deficit in travel.

A TOURISM FUNDING VICTORY
Steve Yencich, President of TICOM and President/CEO of MHMRA, writes an interesting follow-up article to his call to action in the May 5 issue of Michigan Tourism Business, commending many of you for the action you took early this summer to protect Travel Michigan's promotion budget. But, he reminds us that we need to continue to "coordinate, cooperate and coalesce on issues of joint concern" if the tourism industry is to strengthen its political clout with the state's legislators.

MTVTA will continue to offer no-cost, online training courses for employees of Michigan’s tourism and hospitality industries, through April of 2004.  Available titles include: Overcoming Challenging Service Situations in Tourism, Communications to Develop Relationships in Tourism, Advancing Your Service Expertise in Tourism, Dynamics of Leadership in Tourism, and Writing a Marketing Plan for Tourism.  Certificates of accomplishment are available.
