IMPACT OF INT'L TRAVEL
|
First Sept. 11 and the fear of more terrorism, then the war in the Middle East, and now SARS: International tourism is suffering again, dealing a severe blow to countless small businesses, entire industries and an already weak global economy. … In an age of easier travel, vanishing borders, growing trade and expanding middle classes, international tourism has become an increasingly potent economic force. … International tourism—classified as an export of services from the country visited—is nearly four times as large as global steel exports, 50% bigger than global exports of clothes and textiles and roughly equal to global exports of cars. Excerpts from: “Already Battered By Terror, Tourism Gets Double Blow: Ward and SARS Force Many To Abandon Travel Plans; Fallout for Global Economy,” The Wall Street Journal, Tuesday, April 8, 2003, p. A9.

TRAVELER INTENTIONS TO VISIT MICHIGAN
|
05-02-03 – In March, the Michigan Travel Intentions Index™ declined for the third straight month to end the period at 131.7, the lowest level for a very long time. Once again, the MTI Index seems to be mirroring the performance of the Consumer Confidence Index, which has been in a negative spiral during recent months. Basically, this means that Midwestern consumers are indicating that their likelihood to travel in Michigan during the next twelve months is declining.
Michigan Travel Intentions Index™ is derived from the data generated by a monthly phone survey of 400 households, selected at random, from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin and Ontario. The index is a measure of the difference between respondents who expect to take "more" versus "fewer" pleasure trips to Michigan in the next 12 months. Comparisons are made to the last month and the last 12 months.
