A NEW TOURISM INDUSTRY LIAISON
Travel Michigan, MSU Extension, the MSU Dept. of Park, Recreation & Tourism Resources and the MSU Tourism Resource Center have joined together to create an Extension liaison position. The purpose of this new position is to foster the exchange of information and expertise between Travel Michigan, MSU units and tourism professionals. The on-campus units at MSU house a number of experts in tourism-related subjects ranging from casinos to rivers and trails to economic impacts. MSU Extension employs agents in the field who can bring this knowledge to life for your tourism or economic development organization. Travel Michigan has access to data that would be helpful to groups developing local and regional tourism strategies. If you are interested in finding out more, contact Dave Smyth at 517.335.5801 or smythd1@michigan.org.

MIDWESTERNERS' INTENTIONS TO VISIT MICHIGAN
03-27-03 – The MTI Index™ has remained relatively flat throughout the months of December 2002, January 2003, and February 2003, registering 136.0, 135.6, and 135.2, respectively. The MTII™ did not experience a large decline in February, as did the Consumer Confidence Index. Together these results indicate that Midwestern consumers are likely to spend only slightly less on Michigan pleasure travel products and services than last year; however, they will most likely spend considerably less on most other purchases. Michigan Travel Intentions Index™ is derived from the data generated by a monthly phone survey of 400 households, selected at random, from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin and Ontario. The index is a measure of the difference between respondents who expect to take "more" versus "fewer" pleasure trips to Michigan in the next 12 months. Comparisons are made to the last month and the last 12 months.
