MICHIGAN'S $3 BILLION TRAVEL DEFICIT
YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST ...
MSU researchers estimate that Michigan's economy currently has an annual trade deficit in travel of nearly $3 billion dollars.  This deficit costs the state jobs and results in lost business profits and tax revenues.  It is also definitive evidence of an industry facing major challenges.

2003 TOURISM OUTLOOK CONFERENCE
There is still time to register for the 18th annual Michigan Tourism Outlook Conference to be held Wednesday, March 5, 2003 in East Lansing.  The theme of this year’s conference will be “Identifying and Closing the Gaps".  Presentation topics include: a look back at Michigan tourism in 2002, a forecast for 2003, geo-tourism, H.R. development issues, the Michigan travel trade deficit, climate change impacts, changes in Michigan tourism, a state/industry partnership, and information about tourism investment forums.
 
A NEW COLUMN FROM TICOM
We are pleased that Steve Yencich, President of the Tourism Industry Coalition of Michigan and President/CEO of the Michigan Hotel, Motel & Resort Association has agreed to write a monthly column!  His first article addresses how what legislators don't know about tourism can hurt us.

MSU FACULTY VIEWS FOR GOVERNOR GRANHOLM
In late November 2002, Michigan State University presented Governor-Elect Jennifer Granholm's transition team with a collection of papers about the critical issues, problems and opportunities facing the State of Michigan's new executive leadership.  This compilation entitled, Michigan's Opportunities and Challenges: MSU Faculty Perspectives, contained a paper about "Growing Michigan's Tourism Industry," which may be of special interest to you.

WORKSHOPS: ECONOMIC IMPACT OF TOURISM
