MICHIGAN TOURISM VIRTUAL TRAINING ACADEMY

It is our pleasure to introduce you to the new Michigan Tourism Virtual Training Academy (MTVTA) portal web site. We are in the process of developing five prepaid, self-paced, specialized tourism and hospitality skills training courses that will be offered online at www.tourismcenter.msu.edu/MTVTA.

The first Academy course, “Overcoming Challenging Service Situations in Tourism,” is now available at that site. Some of the content included in the course was developed by one of the leading companies in online education and represents the finest training available on the Internet today. The remaining content has been tailored by us specifically for tourism industry employees in Michigan.

BEEFREEWAY MODULE OF THE MONTH
Training Topic of the Month – Communication Etiquette

How many communication tools do you use in your daily business?  Telephone?  E-mail?  Cellular phone?  Pager? Fax?  How confident are you about your communication etiquette when using these communication tools?  Have you ever had business partners or customers who misunderstood your e-mail or telephone messages?

Today, it is difficult to find a universal manual for modern communication etiquette, simply because more communication media are invented faster than ever.  Day by day, we rely on these advanced tools to transmit business, to build customer relations, and to expand business horizons.  Thus, it is crucial to implement appropriate communication etiquette using different types of tools.

In this month’s featured BeeFreeway training module, “Communication Etiquette”, you can learn the CAGE (Culture + Audience + Goal = Etiquette) decision-making model and apply it to your daily business communication.  The course contents also include writing etiquette including e-mail messages, handwritten notes, memos and formal letters.  In today’s competitive business environment, knowing the right communication etiquette for different communication media could put your business a step ahead your competitors.

2002 NATIONAL EXTENSION TOURISM CONFERENCE
The 2002 National Extension Tourism Conference (NET 2002) is coming to Michigan!  It will be held Monday, September 16th through Thursday, September 19th at the Park Place Hotel in Traverse City.  This national conference is open to administrators, managers, researchers, and specialists engaged in tourism education and research.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn and experience tourism first hand at a major destination in Michigan, network and exchange ideas with people from all over the country, and strengthen Extension’s capacity to deliver tourism programs and technical assistance.

Presentations will be made throughout the week on topics such as Agri-Tourism, Economic Impacts, Outdoor Recreation/Natural Resources, Rural Tourism Development, Cultural/Heritage, Public Policy, Tourism Research, Partnerships, Technology, and Planning & Development.

A highlight of the conference will be an afternoon-long “workshop on the move”, which includes your choice of a unique pre-arranged tour full of northwest Michigan flavor (literally, at some stops!).  Some of the sites included are a two-hour ride on the Tall Ship Madeline, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, a lighthouse, a winery, a ski/golf resort, a casino, Traverse City Convention and Visitors Bureau, and agri-tourism destinations.

For more information about the NET 2002 conference, click here!
