03-26-04 – According to the Michigan Department of Treasury the lodging industry use tax collections in October 2003 were $6,354,436—up from $5,352,984 in October 2002, in November 2003 were $4,304,932—up from $4,238,381 in November 2002, and in December 2003 were $3,163,830—up from $3,081,279 in December 2002.

The total use tax collections reported to Treasury by the lodging industry for the year 2003 were $57,419,805, up from $56,103,505 for the year 2002, down from $60,002,476 for the year 2001, and down from $62,193,465 for the year 2000.

– Michigan’s lodging industry use tax collections in July 2003 were $5,683,062—
down from $6,374,214 in July 2002, in August 2003 were $7,417,315—up from $6,724,163 in August 2002, and in September 2003 were $7,897,238—up from $6,602,836 in September 2002.

Nothing new to report.

10-10-03
– The Michigan lodging industry use tax collections in June 2003 were $4,858,896 as compared to $4,136,778 in June 2002.  Hopefully, we will see this increase develop into a positive trend throughout the entire summer season.

09-02-03 – SPECIAL MID-ISSUE UPDATE:
The Michigan lodging industry use tax collections were 17.48% lower in April 2003 than in April 2002 and 15.25% lower in May 2002 than in May 2003.  These numbers are comparable to the amounts collected during the same months four years ago in 1999.

08-28-03 –
Nothing new to report.  We expect to receive data for April, May and June next week.

07-31-03 –
Nothing new to report.

07-03-03 –
To review the lodging industry use tax collections reported to the Michigan Department of Treasury between October 2002 and March 2003:  Oct. 2002 was 4.16% lower than Oct. 2001, Nov. 2002 was 1.59% lower than Nov. 2001, Dec. 2002 was 3.18% lower than Dec. 2001, Jan. 2003 was 6.36% lower than Jan. 2002, Feb. 2003 was 2.91% lower than Feb. 2002, and March 2003 was 2.10% lower than March 2003.  Michigan’s lodging industry is still not seeing the recovery they’ve been hoping for.
