Hammons Hotels, Inc., was recently named, the 2003 “Industry Leader of the Year” by The School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University. Weckstein was recognized during The School’s 76th annual Celebration of Leadership event held at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. He was honored for donating his time and talent to The School of Hospitality Business, as well as for his major contributions to the hospitality industry and to numerous civic, community and philanthropic organizations. To mark the occasion John Q. Hammons Hotels, Inc. established the Lou Weckstein Endowed Hotel Operations Student Scholarship for The School. On January 26, 2004, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm announced three appointments to the Michigan Travel Commission. The commission is responsible for assisting Travel Michigan in developing a comprehensive, long-range vision for tourism. Name to the commission are: Tanya Heidelberg-Yopp, President of Motown Center, the new music museum located in downtown Detroit; Frank Taylor, President of Sweet Georgia Brown, Detroit’s newest premier restaurant; and W. Brett Shelton, President of the Michigan International Speedway located in Brooklyn. “These are three successful and talented business people who will be invaluable to Travel Michigan,” said Granholm. “Their knowledge and expertise will help the tourism industry in Michigan move forward, and I am grateful for their willingness to serve.” These appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate. In a ceremony during the 2004 American Bus Association Marketplace, Marlene Cnossen, received the Certified Travel Industry Specialists (CTIS) designation. Cnossen is the Tour and Travel Manager for Circle Michigan based in Traverse City, which represents statewide tourism and packaged travel industry suppliers. The CTIS program is the only university-administered continuing education program designed exclusively for the motor coach, group, and packaged travel industry. The Michigan Mountain Biking Association (MMBA) Southeast Chapter was recently given a Community Service Award from the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association (MRPA). The City of Novi Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department (NPRF) nominated the MMBA for developing the 10-mile bike and hike trail network at Lakeshore Park. Working together with the NPRF, MMBA volunteers logged thousands of hours and developed one of the premier mountain biking destinations in Southeast Michigan. As a result, park use has increased ten-fold since 1996. More information on the Novi trail is available on-line at www.mmba.org/novi. Newly elected directors of Circle Michigan include Michael Hall of Days Inn & Suites of Traverse City and Sarah Ewing with Lake Michigan Carferry Service, Ludington. Elected to a second term is Tabitha Erickson CTIS, Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn Restaurant. Herb Zeilinger, Frankenmuth Convention and Visitors Bureau will serve as President of the 2004 Board of Directors. Erickson will serve as Vice President and Hall will fill the Secretary/Treasurer slot. 2004 Board Members also include Sue Bladeck, Dutch Village, Holland; Jean Hemmer, Lake View Hotel, Mackinac Island; Sharon Koops, Added Touch Receptive Services, Holland; RJ Belanger, Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau; Mary Lou Manier, Grand Rapids/Kent County Convention and Visitors Bureau; David Lorenz, Travel Michigan Representative and Patricia Thomas, CTP, Circle Michigan Inc.
