02-24-04 – Michigan’s lodging industry use tax collections in July 2003 were $5,683,062—
down from $6,374,214 in July 2002, in August 2003 were $7,417,315—up from $6,724,163 in August 2002, and in September 2003 were $7,897,238—up from $6,602,836 in September 2002.
11-21-03 – Nothing new to report.
10-10-03 – The Michigan lodging industry use tax collections in June 2003 were $4,858,896 as compared to $4,136,778 in June 2002. Hopefully, we will see this increase develop into a positive trend throughout the entire summer season.
09-02-03 – SPECIAL MID-ISSUE UPDATE: The Michigan lodging industry use tax collections were 17.48% lower in April 2003 than in April 2002 and 15.25% lower in May 2002 than in May 2003. These numbers are comparable to the amounts collected during the same months four years ago in 1999.
08-28-03 – Nothing new to report. We expect to receive data for April, May and June next week.
07-31-03 – Nothing new to report.
07-03-03 – To review the lodging industry use tax collections reported to the Michigan Department of Treasury between October 2002 and March 2003: Oct. 2002 was 4.16% lower than Oct. 2001, Nov. 2002 was 1.59% lower than Nov. 2001, Dec. 2002 was 3.18% lower than Dec. 2001, Jan. 2003 was 6.36% lower than Jan. 2002, Feb. 2003 was 2.91% lower than Feb. 2002, and March 2003 was 2.10% lower than March 2003. Michigan’s lodging industry is still not seeing the recovery they’ve been hoping for.

12-20-02 – Finally! We’ve got some new statewide lodging sector use tax data to report. Unfortunately, 2002-to-date has been a challenging time for Michigan’s lodging industry in terms of room night sales. Happily, we can report that use tax collections increased significantly above June’s low levels in the months of July, August and September (following normal summer trends). However, with the exception of May, the use taxes collected by the state have been lower in every month of this year than during the same months of 2001 and 2000.
Use taxes collected to-date total $43,430,860 compared to $46,927,700 during Jan-Sept 2001 and $47,056,868 during Jan-Sept 2000.
It may be explanatory to note that this chart illustrates the use taxes that lodging establishments charge for sales of room nights.

09-27-02 – Nothing additional to report.
09-05-02 – Use tax collections were slightly lower in April 2002 than in the previous two Aprils, and May 2002 collections were similar to May 2000 and 2001. However, lodging industry use tax collections were significantly lower in June 2002 than in any other recent Junes. As noted when explaining the same trend in sales tax collections, this may be reflective of reduced amounts of business travel in the current weakened economic state.
07-29-02 – Nothing additional to report.
06-28-02 – The statewide use taxes collected by Michigan hotels and motels were slightly lower in February and March 2002 than during the same months in the previous two years.
05-23-02 – The use tax collections in January 2002, the latest month for which data are available, are slightly lower than for the same month last year, but right on track with January 2000.
04-17-02 – A use tax is assessed on every transient hotel or motel room "sold" in Michigan. As expected, Michigan lodging establishments experience higher occupancy rates during the peak summer vacation months, which are obvious in the data collected by the Michigan Department of Treasury. The last three months of 2001 experienced declines in tax collections likely due to the aftershocks of the terrorist attacks on 9/11.
