Governor Jennifer Granholm and Steve Hamp, the chair of the Michigan Travel Commission, presented Wally Bronner and Steve Yencich with this year’s Outstanding Achievement Awards at the annual Michigan Tourism Conference, held October 6th. Bronner was honored for his longstanding commitment to the industry as originator of Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland and which has grown into the world’s largest Christmas store and has served as an anchor attraction for Frankenmuth. Yencich was named for his performance as the CEO of the Michigan Hotel, Motel and Resort Association. He also played a critical role this year in leading a grassroots tourism industry effort, which resulted in legislative approval of continued funding for tourism promotion at the state level. The Tourism Industry Coalition of Michigan (TICOM) presented an award to Governor Jennifer Granholm at the Michigan Tourism Conference in recognition of her outstanding support of Michigan's tourism industry. Cited in the award presentation was the Governor's early summer Michigan Tourism Tour, her public service announcements promoting the Great Lakes State, and her administration’s support of stable state tourism promotion funds. Joseph Fridgen will be ending his appointment with MSU later this year and is currently transitioning to his new leadership role at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. We wish him the best in his new appointment as a faculty member of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies. She will also serve as acting chairperson for the Department of Park, Recreation & Tourism Resources (PRTR), effective November 1, replacing Joseph Fridgen. Dr. Bokemeier will be the administrative leader of PRTR through the end of this calendar year, at which time she will become the interim chairperson of CARRS. On August 26, 2003, the National Council of State Tourism Directors (NCSTD) awarded the 2003 Mercury Award for best Broadcast Radio to Travel Michigan.
