10-10-03 – The Michigan lodging industry sales tax collections in June 2003 were $3,634,726 as compared to $3,146,397 in June 2002. Hopefully, we will see this increase develop into a positive trend throughout the entire summer season. 09-02-03 – SPECIAL MID-ISSUE UPDATE: The Michigan lodging industry sales tax collections were 44.21% higher in April 2003 than in April 2002 and 2.16% lower in May 2002 than in May 2003. 08-28-03 – Nothing new to report. We expect to receive data for April, May and June next week. 07-31-03 – Nothing new to report. 07-03-03 – To review the lodging industry sales tax collections reported to the Michigan Department of Treasury between October 2002 and March 2003: Oct. 2002 was 2.91% higher than Oct. 2001, Nov. 2002 was 10.84% lower than Nov. 2001, Dec. 2002 was 7.81% lower than Dec. 2001, Jan. 2003 was 6.72% lower than Jan. 2002, Feb. 2003 was 2.83% lower than Feb. 2002, and March 2003 was 2.15% lower than March 2003. Michigan’s lodging industry is still not seeing the recovery they’ve been hoping for. 06-11-03 – Nothing additional to report. Hopefully, we will have some new data from Treasury by next month’s issue. 05-02-03 – Nothing additional to report. 03-24-03 – Nothing additional to report. 02-07-03 – Nothing additional to report. 12-20-02 – Finally! We’ve got some new statewide lodging sector sales tax data to report. Sales tax collections increased in each of the months of July, August and September of this year, continuing an increasing trend line, which began after the year’s lowest level in April. On a positive note, September’s collections represent the first month this year that sales tax collections exceeded those reported in the same month of the prior year. It may be explanatory to note that this chart illustrates the sales taxes that lodging establishments charge for sales of items other than room nights. 11-26-02 – Nothing additional to report. We apologize for this delay of information. 10-26-02 – Nothing additional to report. Receipt of data from Treasury is pending. 09-27-02 – Nothing additional to report. 09-05-02 – Sales tax collections were only slightly lower in April and May 2002 than in recent previous years. However, they were significantly lower in June 2002 than in any other recent Junes. This may be reflective of the downturn in business travel that the hospitality industry has been facing as a result of the weakened national and state economies. 07-29-02 – Nothing additional to report. 06-28-02 – Statewide hotel and motel sales tax collections have continued to be lower in February and March 2002 than during the same months in the previous two years.
05-23-02 – In the latest month for which data are available, January 2002, it appears that the sales tax collected by the state's lodging establishments, was slightly lower than during the same month in the past two years.
04-17-02 – Hotels and motels in Michigan charge sales tax on products such as store merchandise and food and beverage service. Overall, there is not much change in the monthly levels of sales tax collection reported by the Michigan Department of Treasury between 2000 and 2001. Unfortunately, we have little explanation for the spike reported in September 2000.
