Michigan Tourism Business Goes “Lite”
By Donald F. Holecek, Editor of Michigan Tourism Business

Welcome to the first issue of the “lite” version of Michigan Tourism Business (MTB).  In earlier issues we have discussed the substantive reduction in our university budget and in the Michigan Virtual University’s (MVU) financial support for this newsletter.  That is the bad news, but the focus here is on the future and our strategy for coping with the budget challenge we face.

MVU has indicated that it will continue to offer the on-line training modules around which we have developed the set of five courses focused on tourism topics through early April of next year.  This newsletter has been the primary vehicle for promoting the availability of these training modules; hence, to capitalize on the significant investment in developing these courses it is important to maintain MTB in some form.  Despite the fiscal challenges, we have elected to continue to offer our courses free to employees of small Michigan businesses.  However, readers are advised to take advantage of these on-line courses as soon as possible given the fiscal challenges we and MVU are confronting.

We have also decided to continue to offer MTB to readers at no cost.  To help defray costs, we will begin to accept advertisements and recruit issue sponsors for MTB.  Details of these new fund raising options are provided elsewhere in this issue.  Your consideration of these opportunities will be appreciated by us and by the 4000+ Michigan Tourism Business subscribers and others who receive this monthly report.  Contributing may even be a good investment decision for you to make!

We are committed to making this “lite” version of MTB a valuable tool for you to use to access on-line training courses as well as to keep on top of our research and other news relevant to Michigan tourism industry for as long as our fiscal circumstances permit.  Your understanding and continuing support are appreciated.
