Highlights from the “Michigan 2001 Travel Summary”
Michigan received 67 million visitors (person-trips) in 2001 resulting in 140.9 million person-days.
The region with the largest visitation was the Southeast at 31.7 million visitors, which was over 47% of the statewide total, and 60.5 million person-days.
While the Upper Peninsula had the smallest number, that region still accounted for 5 million visitors, and 13.6 million visitor days.
About 57% of Michigan's visitors were our own Michigan residents. Another 18% came from the surrounding Great Lakes states. The remaining 25% came from outside the Great Lakes region.
The Detroit area alone accounted for nearly one-quarter of all the travelers in the state. View the full report as prepared by D.K. Shifflet & Associates Ltd. in March 2003.
