Greater Detroit American Heritage River Initiative By Mark Breederland of Michigan Sea Grant Extension Former President Clinton established the American Heritage Rivers Program in 1997 “to support community-based efforts to restore and protect the environmental, economic, cultural and historic values of our rivers.”
Of the 126 rivers nominated for the designation, only 14 were chosen, and the Detroit River was selected in 1998, making it eligible for Federal support in the form of grants and technical assistance.
Since that time the Greater Detroit American Heritage River Initiative has focused its energy on the restoration, redevelopment and reopening to the public of Historic Fort Wayne—Detroit’s largest historic site—including public access to almost one mile of Detroit riverfront.
