Michigan Passes Legislation Creating New Recreation Vehicle Width and Length Regulations

By Bill Sheffer

Michigan Governor John Engler signed legislation on June 21, 2002 insuring recreation vehicle owners the maximum width and length standards in the industry.

Senate Bill 1124, introduced by Senator Walter North of St. Ignace, changes the maximum length of a motor home from 40 feet to 45 feet. It also updates the legal limit applying to the width of recreation vehicles to 102 inches. This applies to all trailer coaches, truck campers and motorhomes.  In addition, the new definition allows for appurtenances of up to six inches on both sides of the vehicle.  Michigan becomes the 41st state to allow motor homes over 40 feet to be sold and driven in the state.

“This allows recreation vehicle owners with in the state and from across the country to travel throughout the State of Michigan with today’s newest RVs” says Bill Sheffer, Director of the Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds, a non-profit trade association located in Okemos.

“More people are enjoying the RV lifestyle because RVs provide safe and secure recreation, put families in control of their travel and promote traditional family values. We see more and more retirees choosing recreation vehicles for full time living and traveling all across America,” Sheffer stated.
