Legislative Column
By Rep. Gerald Van Woerkom

Every year at this time, Michigan motorists become aware of the overwhelming number of construction projects across the state. While this may cause some minor inconvenience to travelers, this is a powerful statement to tourists that Michigan is committed to fixing and maintaining our roads.  A strong infrastructure is critical to ensuring Michigan residents and tourists alike have safe, easy access to our many destination points. Having traveled to other states, one of the first things I notice about them is the condition of their roads.

Our roads can leave a lasting impression on visitors to our state.  According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) the state will spend $1.5 billion this year on 420 construction projects statewide. This money goes to fix and maintain state highways and bridges. These improvements are part of a 5-year plan to address the critical needs of Michigan infrastructure.

Because construction projects can often be a hassle, MDOT has information available on their websight regarding road closings and detours. This is especially helpful in planning a long trip.  Their websight address is
www.michigan.gov/mdot.  MDOT is also using new methods this year to communicate with drivers, including:  microwave sensors, wireless communications and changeable message signs.  These can help motorists determine how long delays will be and will offer suggestions for avoiding traffic.

Earlier this year, the legislature passed a law that allows MDOT to contract with private companies to provide this traffic information to customers by using intelligent transportation systems.  These companies will provide traffic data to MDOT and to their customers. Technology may soon be available that would send these traffic updates directly to a person’s computer or palm pilot.

So when you get caught in construction this summer, try to remember that despite the inconvenience, having a strong road system is important to the state. Also plan ahead by checking out MDOT’s web site and leave a little extra time for traveling.  This will help you relax and enjoy your vacation travels this summer.
