The No-Fuss, No-Muss Response
Email and vmail beat “no comment” or no callback at all.

It’s a familiar scenario: A reporter has “just a couple of questions” and wants an interview ASAP.

But, what do you want? Have you:

. . . Had problems with this reporter in the past;

. . . Don’t want to risk getting into some difficult issues but would still like to be in her piece; or

. . . Really can't accommodate her requestfor a sit-down interview?

Then consider an alternative: emailing or calling when you’re likely to get her voice mail. Swapping a couple of messages about what she needs and you can provide:

  • Shows responsiveness. You’re not blowing her off, but you are doing what’s good for you and your client.

  • Ensures that the information you’re conveying is recorded accurately.

  • Positions you as helpful. Take your best shot with a good quote or data point, followed up for a “feel free to use any of this.”

It’s better to let technology give you a bit of an edge in managing some callbacks than to ignore a reporter whose attention you may want later.
