Public Employee Union Dues

Currently, public employee labor unions require their members to pay dues that are then used to support candidates and issues of the labor union leaders’ choosing.  This initiative prohibits public employee labor organizations from using dues or fees for political contributions unless the employee provides prior consent each year on a specified written form. The prohibition does not apply to dues or fees collected for charitable organizations, health care insurance, or other purposes directly benefiting the public employee. Labor organizations are also required to maintain and submit to the Fair Political Practices Commission records (not subject to public disclosure) concerning individual employees' and organizations' political contributions.

The petition circulation deadline is in July, so there is plenty of time to get out and collect signatures to put this initiative on the ballot.  Contact party headquarters, (408) 246-6600, for information on how to get petitions.
