Unlike most newly redesigned cars, the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu continues to add features and value in its second post-makeover model year. Performance, mileage, safety and cabin technology all receive upgrades. Sophomore slump? Not for Malibu!
It’s rare you see a manufacturer making changes much less improvements in the second model year after a complete redesign. However, Chevrolet has defied this rule by continuing to improve the Malibu, perhaps the most acclaimed Chevy of recent years. For example, four-cylinder Malibus (except the base model) get a six-speed automatic transmission to improve performance and fuel mileage. Try finding a six-speed autobox in any comparable car. It’s unique to Malibu! In addition, Chevy has made GM’s highly regarded StabiliTrak electronic stability control standard across the Malibu board for 2009. Stability control has been proven to prevent accidents by helping the driver maneuver out of skids that otherwise would become crashes. On the technology front, Malibu now offers Bluetooth connectivity as an option for those who want hands-free cell phone use.
Fortunately, all of the appealing qualities of the Malibu that earned it so many raves and awards upon introduction return for 2009. There’s Malibu’s roomy and well appointed cabin, its smooth ride and responsive handling and a choice of eager engines, not to mention body styling usually reserved for high-priced sport sedans. This is a stylish, well-made car, one that pleases both the eye and the pocketbook while satisfying a driver’s soul.
The 2009 Malibu is a midsize, five-passenger sedan that offers LS, LT and LTZ trim levels, as well as a gas/electric hybrid model. Standard features on the LS model include 17-inch wheels with Sterling Silver trim, black power outside mirrors, AM/FM stereo with CD player and MP3 playback and remote keyless entry. The 1LT trim adds OnStar with Turn-by-Turn navigation, steering wheel-mounted controls and XM Satellite radio. Step up to the 2LT and add heated seats, power driver’s seat, Bluetooth connectivity and remote vehicle starter system. The LTZ model features 18-inch 10-spoke wheels, heated two-tone leather-appointed seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and a premium audio package.
The Malibu LS and LT come with a standard 169-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The fuel-saving six-speed automatic is available with the four-cylinder on the LT and standard on the LTZ. Malibu LT and LTZ are also available with a 252-hp 3.6-liter V6 using the six-speed automatic. The EPA estimates mileage at 22 city and 33 highway with the four-cylinder with the automatic transmission.
The Malibu Hybrid combines the four-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor and transmits power via the four-speed automatic transmission. Standard safety features on all models include ABS, traction control, StabiliTrak, curtain side airbags and front-seat side airbags. Seventeen-inch wheels are now standard on the LS and Hybrid versus the 16-inchers previously offered.
The 2009 Chevy Malibu received five stars, the highest, in government crash testing. Insurance industry testers also gave the Malibu the highest score of “Good” for the frontal-offset crash test.
A five-passenger sedan, the Malibu rides on the long-wheelbase version of GM’s front-wheel drive Epsilon platform. The long 112.3-inch wheelbase gives the Malibu a spacious backseat with plenty of legroom, and a substantial and stiff chassis provides a quiet and solid feel. Malibu’s independent suspension setup has been tuned to feel responsive, competent and refined. The interior design is similarly well executed. A flowing instrument panel features gauges and controls that are easy to decipher and use. Interior surfaces have a rich graining and are soft to the touch. Although leather is optional, the base fabric seats feel expensive and appear durable.
Value and Malibu are synonymous. Pricing places a $22,275 MSRP on the base LS model. The well-equipped Malibu LT is only slightly more at an MSRP of $23,175. Even the high-tech Malibu Hybrid is tagged at just $26,225 (MSRP).
In its initial year, the new Chevrolet Malibu received many accolades and awards including J.D. Power and Associates recognition as "2008 Highest Ranked Midsize Car in Initial Quality," the North American International Auto Show’s 2008 North American Car of the Year, Car and Driver’s “10-Best Cars,” Automobile magazine’s 2008 All-Star List and Kelley Blue Book’s 2008 Best Family Vehicle Award. The 2009 Chevrolet Malibu is an even better car!
That’s why the Malibu is a must-see, must-drive car for midsize sedan buyers.
