The Toyota FJ Cruiser has been updated for 2012 while maintaining its legendary reputation for style, ruggedness and off-road capability. Designed to offer Canadian shoppers impressive performance on and off of the road, the FJ Cruiser taps into decades of Toyota Truck history for confident operation on any terrain.
Best of all, new options packages and equipment enhancements have been applied to deliver more selection and value than ever.
“The FJ Cruiser is the product of Toyota’s experience – over the past 70 years – in building rugged, reliable trucks designed to succeed in the toughest climate and terrain conditions around the world,” noted Tony Wearing, Senior Managing Director, Toyota Canada Inc. “We’re pleased to offer the FJ Cruiser – rough and ready, inside and out – in five models for 2012, with packages ready for whatever adventure Canadians desire.”
Should that adventure take you and yours through some challenging trails or off-road conditions, a variety of systems and engineering efforts are designed to help see you to your destination with no second thought. Here’s a closer look.
Real Four-Wheel Drive: Key in delivering maximum traction on all surfaces is the FJ Cruiser’s real 4x4 system. With shift-on-the-fly functionality, a low-range equipped two-speed transfer case and locking centre and rear differentials, this 4x4 system blows the doors clean off of more on-road oriented ‘AWD’ systems.
Armoured: Wincing while travelling over obstacles is a thing of the past, thanks to the FJ Cruiser’s skid armour. Attached to the underside for enhanced protection of the engine, transfer case and fuel tank, the armour plates ensure that vital components aren’t subjected to abuse from rocks or logs on your favourite trail. Engineers worked to ‘tuck’ other vital components up against the FJ’s high-strength frame rails for added protection. Add in generous ground clearance and leading approach and departure angles, and you have a confident performer even on very uneven surfaces.
Heavy-Duty Running Gear: Fit your FJ Cruiser with the ‘Off Road” package, and you will benefit from front and rear heavy-duty Bilstein shocks that are designed to take a beating. In addition, shoppers can specify 16-inch black TRD alloy wheels with BFGoodrich Rugged Terrain tires for added off-road grip.
Shift Your Way: Many shoppers prefer the convenience of the FJ Cruiser’s five-speed automatic transmission, though a six-speed manual is available for the ultimate in control over the robust four-litre engine.
Active Traction Control (ATRAC): Toyota’s ATRAC system uses a little computerized ingenuity to do big things for traction in challenging situations. Effectively used as an ‘off-road’ traction control system, ATRAC detects low-traction surfaces beneath individual wheels and can re-direct torque to the wheels with more traction. This system can prove vital when escaping deep mud, or when a severe lateral incline puts one or more wheels in the air. By neutralizing wheel spin via manipulation of the FJ’s brakes and 4x4 system, ATRAC helps make sure the vehicle keeps moving, rather than digging itself into a hole.
Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS): Relaxed steering for highway driving couldn’t exist alongside the responsive, accurate steering demanded by off-road aficionados - until now. Toyota’s innovative VGRS system actively alters the steering ratio based on the FJ Cruiser’s speed to deliver both a relaxed in-town experience and high-precision off-road experience. The fully automatic VGRS system works without any involvement required by the driver.
