Vehicle Profile: The 2012 Scion xB
Breaking the boring crossover mold.

The Scion brand has defined cool since it was first introduced to the U.S. market, and no vehicle has exemplified the success of the brand more than the xB. The boxy vehicle defies convention. It features the roominess of a crossover and the “cool factor” of a well-designed hatchback. The well-regarded xB continues its dominance for 2012 with more of everything that trendsetting buyers have come to expect from the Scion brand.

When looking at the 2012 xB with an eye on practicality, this segment-busting vehicle really impresses. The xB boasts 70 cubic feet of available cargo space, or more space than many expensive and fuel-thirsty crossovers. The xB features a 158-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, yet that power won’t hurt buyers at the pump. The EPA estimates 28 highway mpg for the xB.

The xB (MSRP starting at $16,300) comes with 16-inch wheels, keyless entry and one of the best standard sound systems on the market – a 160-watt Pioneer audio system that boasts top technology and amazing sound quality. The Pioneer system features an auxiliary audio input jack and USB connectivity for MP3 players, a must for today’s tech-conscious buyer. Also standard is Scion’s BLU Logic® hands-free system, which enables owners to utilize Bluetooth to interact with their smartphones. HD Radio is also standard as part of this system.

Offering standard features that can only be had as options on competitive makes is a hallmark of the Scion brand, and so is an endless array of customization options. Anyone looking to make their xB stand out in any crowd can enhance the exterior with special foglamps, a rear wind deflector, carbon fiber window trim and Genuine Scion Paint Protection. Since no component is more interchangeable than wheels, Certified Scion dealers offer upgraded 16-, 17- and 19-inch alloys that are of much higher quality than the aftermarket wheels offered at most tire stores. Best of all, Scion approves of these wheels, which tells tuners they’re buying quality parts.

Customizing the exterior is a must, but what about a one-of-a-kind cabin? Scion offers a variety of interior enhancements including Scion Remote Engine Start, the Scion Security System and a variety of handy storage nets to properly maximize the vast space within the xB. While the standard Pioneer sound system is magnificent, Scion understands that audiophiles and techies can sometimes demand further refinement. That’s why Scion offers Navigation System 200 with a seven-inch LCD screen that can also play DVD movies. Buyers can also opt for an upgraded Pioneer sound system with Bluetooth connectivity, the highly popular Pandora Internet Radio and iTunes tagging.

For xB drivers who are more interested in tuning their vehicle with added performance options, Scion offers TRD parts and accessories. Few brands have as much street credibility as Toyota Racing Development – “TRD” – which is why the xB and TRD make such a wonderful team. A TRD Sport Muffler improves airflow and sounds sublime, and for improved stopping power, there is the TRD High Performance Brake Kit. The xB can be lowered with a TRD Lowering Sway Bar, and a TRD Rear Sway Bar can be had to further stabilize the vehicle. Add upsized wheels to the TRD lowering kit and the already stylish xB turns into a genuine work of art.

Improved handling is also available courtesy of TRD Performance Shocks. Combine the lowering kit, upgraded shocks and upsized wheels, and the xB transforms into a sporty wagon that rivals coupes for driving refinement.

The xB is a top-notch value, and part of its successful formula includes industry-leading safety features. The xB boasts front and rear side-curtain airbags, advanced airbags for the driver and front passenger, and driver and passenger seat-mounted side airbags. Further, the xB comes with the Toyota Star Safety System, which includes Traction Control, Anti-lock Brakes, Vehicle Stability Control, Brake Assist and Smart Stop Technology. Add in the Scion Service Boost complimentary maintenance plan, which covers all factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles and you’re covered on all bases.

For proof of just how safe the xB is, look no further than the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which awarded the xB a “Top Safety Pick” designation after the xB earned the highest-possible scores for frontal, side- and rear-impact crash protection, plus a roof that can withstand the force of four times the car’s weight.
