Who knew auto parts could be so fashionable? Lexus challenged four of the world’s top fashion designers to create accessories made from parts of a dismantled CT Hybrid for an advertising campaign in Vogue.
Using recycling as an art form, the designers took ‘Engineering Amazing’ to a new level in the creation of both stunning and fashionable works of art for the Lexus Fashion Workshop. Designers used some of the more than 2,000 parts from a CT Hybrid, a vehicle that is 90 percent recyclable.
Some of the best engineered auto parts provided unique building blocks for creating innovative fashion accessories. The fashion designers were forced to rethink their notions of automotive design for this groundbreaking collection.
The results did not disappoint; designer Moss Lipow’s “Environmental Crown of Virtue” was made by using a transmission starter and exhaust manifold gasket. “The Valve Collection,” crafted by jewelry designer Eddie Borgo, incorporated valve lifters, crank bearings and hose clamps, which created a look that could be described as futuristic chic. John Patrick designed a sleek trench coat, shorts and clutch combination known as “Nomadic Sanctuary.” He used floor mats made from plant-based plastic, sustainable sound-dampening material, wire harness, leather seat covers and cargo covers. “The Luna Shoe” conceived by Alejandro Ingelmo is a head-turning footwear look made of armrest leather trim and clear plastic tubing.
A six-page advertisement in the January 2012 issue of Vogue will feature the four pieces. Videos of the Lexus CT being dismantled are available at www.Vogue.com/promotions/lexus. In addition, a series of interviews with the four designers will also be available.
The collection was on display in early December at Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the most prestigious art shows in the Americas where the pieces were sold at private auction. The proceeds went to the Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fashion Fund, a not-for-profit trade association representing more than 400 of America’s womenswear, menswear, jewelry and accessory designers.
Lexus is always a fashionable choice when it comes to driving. It can also be a fashionable choice on the runway, as illustrated by this inventive collection.
