by Michael W. Schultz, Stevinson Automotive Operations Manager
This is the first in a series of six weather related prevention tips to help keep your vehicle in top condition during the winter months.
Cold weather can cause substantial stress on the various systems in an automobile. Improperly maintained automobiles are particularly suseptible to various failures. Extreme cold temperatures can increase wear on tires, belts and hoses, expose weak batteries and cause inadequately protected systems to freeze.
Sadly, a breakdown in the cold can put drivers in life threatening weather, sometimes in unfamiliar or unsafe surroundings. This is the first article in a series of six weather related prevention tips to help keep your vehicle in top condition during the winter months.
Windshield Washer Fluid Reservoir
The windshield washer fluid tank in your vehicle is not a sealed system. Hence, over time the fluid is subject to evaporation which changes the freezing point. Additionally, the heating and cooling of the fluid creates condensation which dilutes the fluid and raises the freezing point. Topping off the fluid with a quality -25 F degree fluid prior to a cold snap will offer the best chance of protection from freezing. When you bring your vehicle to Stevinson for service, we will top off your fluid at no charge as part of our inspection process.
If possible, store your vehicle indoors in extreme cold

Proper paint maintenance can dramatically extend the life – and looks – of your car’s paint.
Don’t be alarmed, but the environment has declared war on your car – more specifically, on your car’s paint. If you live near a major city, then the finish on your vehicle is coming under constant attack from atmospheric pollutants, whether they are from tailpipe emissions, factory smokestacks or even oil-burning stoves in your neighborhood.
