The 2009 Lincoln MKS looks back to the 1941 Lincoln Continental for inspiration, primarily in its iconic “split wing” grille treatment. Still, much of the MKS is based on the Lincoln MKR show car, a showcase for the future. In “person,” the 2009 Lincoln MKS makes a handsome and elegant impression, more than equal to its forbearers and future aspirations.
The 2009 Lincoln MKS grille treatment sets the design standard for Lincolns to come. The split wing grille is nostalgic and contemporary at the same time, just the impression Lincoln wishes to project. Its clean and elegant styling doesn’t give in to trendy fashion, but sets a standard of its own. You must see this car to truly appreciate it.
The MKS uses a “Lincoln-only” version of the 3.7-liter Duratec V6 with 273 hp and 270 lb/ft of torque on a diet of regular gas. Front-wheel drive is the standard layout, and AWD is available. The AWD system makes a lot of sense in the MKS. With all that power, AWD spreads the horsepower around and avoids any hint of torque steer. It improves handling and safety, too. The MKS comes with a six-speed automatic that offers standard “Drive,” “Sport Drive” and “Manual” modes. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard with 19 and inches optional. Should you go for the “big wheel” option, the MKS suspension calibration gets tweaked to enhance ride quality.
The MKS interior is a revelation. The design is classic and contemporary at the same time, a very cool trick! The materials are high in quality, and the build quality measures up to anything in its class. Lincoln uses “Bridge of Weir” leather trim as standard with wood trim on the dash and steering wheel. The cabin is roomy in all dimensions, and the seats are ultra-cushy and supportive. Backseat passengers are rewarded with more space than the MB E-Class or BMW 5 Series. Of particular note is the MKS’ quiet cabin, a testament to the efforts of Lincoln engineers to banish noise, vibration and harshness.
Lincoln is positioning the MKS as a showcase for technology. For example, you can use voice commands to control any music player or Bluetooth enabled phone connected to the SYNC system. A navigation system is optional and reviewers say it's an excellent unit with a bright screen and easy to control.
SIRIUS Satellite Radio is another option with a tech upgrade. With SIRIUS Travel Link, you get traffic reports, help in finding gas, get current weather, movie times, scores and more. All this and the prospect of a THX-certified audio system, too!
Lincoln has packed the MKS with all the cool technology it could find. For example, the MKS has a new version of the keyless entry system where the driver just touches buttons outside to open the vehicle. The windshield wipers automatically start when they sense rain, cruise control can be adaptive and there is also the obligatory push-button starter.
Push that starter button and the 3.7-liter V6 sounds sweet, feels smooth and projects power. Road test reviewers say the MKS has solid torque in the low end, so it moves out smartly. Says Motor Trend, “The six-speed automatic is a good dance partner. There's a ratio for every occasion, they are evenly spaced, and you can select how much or how little control you wish to have over gear choices. We preferred the “Sport Drive” mode the most, which means quicker up- and downshifts, yet there is little need to opt for the “Manual” mode.”
Reviewers credit the MKS with good handling and enough moxie for spirited driving. MKS carries itself solidly without feeling heavy. Steering is light and cornering feels nimble. The brakes provide MKS with good stopping power and the feeling there is more in reserve.
The MKS MSRP is $37,665, a class-competitive price that carries true value given the MKS’ room, quality, technology and driving dynamics. The 2009 MKS is so good that Lincoln encourages comparison to the class leaders and feels a test drive will be convincing. We agree, and we invite you to schedule an inspection and test drive at your earliest convenience.
