Vancouver is still a bit concerned about the El Niño effect on next year’s snowfall, but NBC is ready with some new approaches to audio for the 2010 Winter Olympics Games in Vancouver (Feb. 12-28). Like the Beijing Olympics broadcast, the Vancouver Games will be in HD and 5.1, but Bob Dixon, director of sound design and communications for NBC’s Olympics coverage, promises more-aggressive surround mixing at certain venues next year. The luge and bobsled events will benefit from NASCAR-like “speed-shot” microphone techniques.

UK outside-broadcast and uplinking company SIS LIVE has been awarded the multimillion-dollar contract to supply production and distribution facilities for the XIX Commonwealth Games. The event takes place during October 2010 in Delhi, India, where SIS LIVE will be working with host broadcaster Doordarshan, a division of the country’s biggest public-broadcasting service, Prasar Bharati.

Venue News & Notes: Yankee Stadium Is Cracked (at Least the Ramps Are)
The concrete pedestrian ramps at the brand-new $1.5 billion city-subsidized Yankee Stadium have been troubled by cracks, and the team is seeking to determine whether the problems were caused by the installation, the design, the concrete, or other factors, according to several people briefed on the problems. The ramps were built by a company accused of having links to the mob, and the concrete mix was designed and tested by a company under indictment on charges that it failed to perform some tests and falsified the results of others. But it is unclear whether work performed by either firm contributed to the deterioration of the ramps…
