Atlantic 10 Scores With Virtual Media Days

In the cost-conscious college-sports world, Media Day events are an easy place to start looking for savings, and the Atlantic 10 Conference has found an effective formula. Instead of inviting players and coaches to travel to a central location for men’s and women’s basketball media days, the conference is putting together a live teleconference that incorporates all 14 campuses, relying on help from IP-based video service provider Glowpoint.

New Sony XDCAM EX Camcorders Offer DVCAM Recording, Improved Proxy Control

Sony’s XDCAM EX product line for field-based acquisition continues to grow, with the rollout of two camcorders this week. The PMW-350 is the first to have 2/3-in. CMOS sensors, and the PMW-EX1R offers DVCAM recording for users still working in standard definition. Both camcorders are potentially useful for college sports production and coaching programs that have yet to make the leap to HD.

MobiTV Brings Notre Dame and UFC to iPhones

University of Tennessee Taps Telecast Fiber for Double Duty in Control Room

It’s barely the middle of football season at the University of Tennessee, but the basketball teams take the floor for the first time next week. A single control room, housed in the centrally located communications building, handles production of in-arena scoreboard shows for both Neyland Stadium (football) and Thomson-Boling Arena (basketball), so the two-season overlap can be tough on the technical crew supporting UT’s game-day operations. Those two-sport weeks have been further complicated since the athletic department made the switch to high definition, but UT has relied on equipment from Telecast Fiber to ensure a smooth transition back and forth — and back again.

Thought Equity Motion Leverages College Strategy in BBC Partnership

Thought Equity Motion has built its business by acquiring rights to college-sports video, but the company has recently expanded its horizons by entering into a partnership with BBC Motion Gallery, the stock-footage arm of BBC Worldwide. Using the formula Thought Equity has followed to successfully manage content from the Big Ten Conference and NCAA Championships, this partnership will allow Thought Equity to bring footage from the BCC Motion Gallery — including ECB Cricket, the International Tennis Federation, and the National Rugby League (NRL) — into its metadata-rich technology platform and sell it worldwide.

ESPN Regional Television Set to Tip Off SEC Network Package

As part of the 15-year pact recently signed by ESPN and the Southeastern Conference, ESPN Regional Television will air SEC college basketball in 62 TV markets via SEC Network. The regular-season SEC men’s basketball package will tip off in January and consist of Wednesday and Saturday games, including doubleheaders.
