The Mtn. To Host MWC Media Days — And Cut Costs

With college conferences nationwide looking to reduce spending, media days are an expected casualty. Not every conference has its own television network to turn to, but, with help from The Mtn. – Mountain West Sports Network, the Mountain West Conference will produce media days for basketball. When The Mtn. hosts next week’s media days for both men’s and women’s basketball, not only will it boost programming, but having the event in its Denver studios means a cost saving for the network as well as the conference.

Happy Anniversary, (College) Football on TV

September 30 marked the 70th anniversary of the first-ever televised football game, a 1939 contest between Waynesburg College and Fordham University. The telecast was produced in conjunction with the RCA/NBC pavilion at the 1939 New York World’s Fair and aired on NBC’s experimental noncommercial television station, W2XBS. NBC’s first professional football telecast came the following month.

Louisiana State University has had video scoreboards installed in its football stadium and basketball, gymnastics, and volleyball arena since 1999, but until this season, the boards, as well as the luxury suites, were fed standard-definition video. When the baseball stadium was equipped with an HD LED video board this year, the athletic department knew that it was time to convert its video operations to high definition.

KWCH-TV, the CBS in Hutchison, Kan.; KHQ-TV, the NBC affiliate in Spokane, Wash.; and KSTC-TV, an indie station in Minneapolis/St. Paul will contribute local material to GrandStadium.TV, the Minnesota-based firm said.

WAC and Poinsettia Bowl Announce Tie-in for 2011 and 2012

The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl announced its agreements for the next four-year bowl term (2010-2013). The Western Athletic Conference will receive a guaranteed spot in the 2011 and 2012 games and will be a backup in 2010 and 2013 should Navy and Army not be bowl eligible in those respective years. The agreement coupled with the announcement earlier this month that the WAC would receive bids to the Emerald Bowl in 2010 and 2013, gives the conference four guaranteed bowl slots through the 2013 season.
