Sports Emmys Twice As Nice For ESPN, Fox coverage of NASCAR

The Sports Emmys are typically a time when the industry gets together to share the love but last night’s ceremony, held in Rose Hall in New York City’s Time Warner center, was also about sharing the awards as three categories had multiple winners, including Outstanding Technical Team Remote, which went to both ESPN and Fox for their NASCAR coverage.

MMOD: More growth ahead in 2009?

CBSSports.com’s success with March Madness on Demand (MMOD), with nearly five million unique viewers utilizing the video player, is reverberating through the broadcast business. On Wednesday, FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell cited MMOD as an example of how media companies can flourish in the expanding marketplace. "As technology and consumer tastes rapidly change, traditional media companies are trying to adjust their businesses in an effort to retain and grow their audiences. In fact, a motto of this new media marketplace could be 'Innovate and adapt, or die,'" said McDowell.

Viz Engine Powers Graphics for Premier Soccer League
The Premier Soccer League (PSL), Africa’s largest soccer league, has chosen Vizrt solutions and Los Angeles-based graphic design firm Reality Check Studios to produce its graphics packages. PSL games are broadcast on Super Sport, an African all-sports television network. The government owned network, South African Broadcast Corporation (SABC) also carries the PSL matches and is integrating the Vizrt graphics package designed by Reality Check Studios in collaboration with Johannesburg-based Universal Production.

NBC says U.S. Open headed for primetime
For the first time ever the U.S. Open Championship, slated for Torrey Pines golf course in San Diego this June, is scheduled to be broadcast in primetime. On Saturday June 14, NBC's third round coverage will air from 4-10 p.m. EST, with final round coverage on Father's Day Sunday from 3-9 p.m. ET. This is the first scheduled primetime broadcast in U.S. Open history (past Opens have concluded in primetime due to weather conditions).

NFL packaging Friday TV show for Super Bowl
The Sports Business Journal reports that the NFL is packaging a 60- to 90-minute TV show that it plans to air on the Friday before the Super Bowl. The live program will be produced from the Super Bowl’s host city — Tampa in 2009 — by the broadcaster that holds the rights to the Super Bowl, and will be set up as an awards show for some of the league’s top individual awards. NBC has the option to produce and broadcast the show next February.
