In sports, Setanta sizzles...is it time to sell?

The hottest property in European sports broadcasting right now is not going to be sold off, at least not in the near future. The owners of Setanta Sports have confirmed that, although several offers have been received, there are no plans to sell the company, despite its present high currency in a troubled market.

Calrec Audio and Ross Video collaborate on software

Calrec Audio and Ross Video Ltd. have developed a software interface that enables Calrec audio consoles to be controlled remotely by the Ross OverDrive Automated Production Control (APC) system. EVS heads to NAB with new Apple plug-in; Multi-channel disk recorder

EVS heads to NAB with Media Importer, a new EVS plug-in application that is available directly from the Apple Final Cut Pro File/Import menu. It allows the import of any clips available on the EVS XT[2] production server to be made directly available for editing. Also expect to see XT[2]-EditRec, the latest EVS multi-channel disk recorder solution for linear and hybrid editing workflows.

Tandberg launches broadcast receiver

TANDBERG Television will demonstrate the newest features of its encoders, multiplexers and new professional receivers at NAB in its booth #SU4210. ESPN Pitches Video To AOL

Multichannel News reports that ESPN will make sports highlights and other short-form online video content accessible through AOL, marking the first time the programmer has syndicated video content through an Internet portal. Content available through the embedded video player on AOL includes SportsCenter Right Now, a twice-daily recap of top stories; clips from ESPN programs such as Mike and Mike in the Morning, Pardon the Interruption and Around the Horn; and breaking news and game clips.

 
White Sox, Blackhawks Form Far-Reaching Marketing Sponsorship

The SportsBusiness Journal reports that the White Sox and Blackhawks have announced a far-reaching marketing partnership in which each club will promote themselves in the other club’s building and within the other club’s media inventory. This partnership is a rarely heard-of practice for clubs not controlled by the same ownership group.

 
Marketing gold could be found in Web video

USA Today reports that more and more professional and semiprofessional producers are starting to create ad-friendly entertainment and news videos expressly for the Web. The goal is to dramatically change people's video-viewing habits — and cash in on a potentially enormous business opportunity. CBS has led the way in independent producer investments, cutting deals with firms including the high school sports site MaxPreps.

 
MLB takes action to reduce TV blackouts

Yahoo! Sports reports that Major League Baseball is finally trying to white out its blackout problem – and the restrictions that prevent so many from watching games on television and over the Internet may be lifted as early as the 2009 season. Based on information gathered from the owners' meetings in May, MLB will redraw its territorial-rights map – the outdated gerrymandering that causes areas such as Las Vegas and Iowa to be blacked out from 40 percent of games on a full schedule – to better reflect the present broadcast landscape.

 
Nielsen acquires IAG

The New York Times reports that Nielsen has agreed to acquire IAG Research in New York for $225 million in cash. IAG, which had revenue last year estimated at more than $35 million, measures the effectiveness of advertising on television and online for marketers and networks. With the marketing world struggling to figure out the effectiveness of advertising in a world with DVRs and Hulu the move by Nielsen should strengthen the company's value to clients.

 
Citi may give old park new power

Aaron Heilman planned to study architecture at Notre Dame. He learned, however, of the school's requirement that those majors spend a semester in Rome, which would have conflicted with the Irish baseball schedule. But even with a philosophy degree, it's plainly obvious to Heilman that the $800 million wind-blocker rising beyond Shea Stadium's left-field wall will make the Mets' home more hitter friendly in its 45th and final season. In fact, Citi Field already made Shea a better hitter's ballpark, the Mets reliever suggested.

 
NHL attendance sets record, exceeds 21 million in '07-08

A season of suspenseful races and outstanding performances on the ice was accompanied by historic levels of attendance at National Hockey League arenas in 2007-08. Total attendance of 21,236,255 and the per-game average of 17,265 set records in each category and marked the third consecutive season of growth.
