Bursting Detergent Pails Touch Off Intense Recall

Not long ago, Spill Center was involved in the most intense product recall we’ve ever handled. Plastic containers of commercial dishwashing detergent, contaminated with hydrogen peroxide, started expanding and bursting, releasing the highly alkaline liquid. In the first four days of the recall campaign, our call center dispatched cleanup contractors to 480 locations around the U.S. to contain the potentially hazardous material.

Speaking of Airport Fuel Spill Liability
Tom Moses, Spill Center president, was an invited speaker at the Florida Airports Council Facilities and IT Conference held last spring in Clearwater, Fla. He discussed Fuel Farm Maintenance and Environmental Responsibilities. Tom also spoke at the 8th Annual Jet Fuel and Airport Operations Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas, which addressed the challenges confronting the aviation industry.

“New Technologies for Safety and Security” was the topic discussed by Spill Center President Tom Moses when he spoke at the 27th Annual Conference and Exposition of the Dangerous Goods Advisory Council (DGAC), Nov. 9-11, in Atlanta. The event brought together regulators and industry representatives from all modes of transportation to explore issues, events, products and technologies relevant to the safe and secure transportation of hazardous materials.

COST OF SPILLS
88% of all spills processed by Spill Center involve diesel fuel from broken crossover lines and ruptured saddle tanks. Average spill is 104 gallons. Average cost to clean it up nationwide is $9,200.
