CHIEF: Lawrence McNutt named CTO

Lawrence McNutt, co-founder of SOS, has transitioned to the newly created post of chief technology officer.

“SOS is growing very fast in a very difficult industry. We have grown to a point where we need a senior person in the company solely focused on making sure our clients’ and our internal teams’ needs are being met,” said McNutt, who had been serving as director of professional services.

“That’s not just the needs they know about, but the needs they are not even aware of yet. That’s why we keep pioneering new service and support programs.”

Having a single point of accountability also frees up the rest of the SOS team to spend more time serving clients. McNutt has a strong background for his new role, including a decade of experience with IP telephony systems.

“My first telephony project was for a manufacturing company during the Christmas of 1997,” he recalls. “As the sole telephony engineer it was one heck of a holiday, running all over a 100,000-square-foot facility placing phones and turning up circuits. I am glad to say they are still a client today.”

His many years of experience are a great asset for SOS. McNutt long ago tackled such projects as figuring out how to teach data engineers the voice business, and how to teach voice engineers the data business -- something not dealt with in schools. Today McNutt’s dedication is multiplied by a full crew of engineers.

“We work as a team, support each other with a ‘no man left behind’ philosophy, and invest heavily into experience and training,” McNutt said. “Our business changes so fast that education and new experiences are just part of the day-to-day life of an SOS engineer.”

McNutt has personally guided over 70 companies to deploy solutions for converging voice, data and business processes into one system. Projects have ranged from global IP contact centers to 10-person help desks with multimedia routing, custom IVR’s, and CTI integration. His key innovation has been the development of migration strategies from TDM to IP telephony, which has been fundamental to SOS’s success in converged communications.

McNutt has served on the Ingram Micro CTI Council and the NEC America VAR Council. His telephony qualifications include: telecommunications administration, certification in Advanced Telecommunications, Cisco certified design associate, Cisco IP telephony design specialist, enterprise voice-over-data design, NEC certified engineer, and Interactive Intelligence certified systems engineer. McNutt holds a B.S. degree from California Polytechnic State University.
