Frisco Square comes alive on Friday nights this July with
Jazz in the Square. New this summer, the series brings you a variety of skilled musicians whose creativity contributes to this rich genre of American musical heritage. Come prepared with blankets and lawn chairs and settle in for a fine evening of outdoor entertainment. On July 15, you’ll be entertained by Imperial Brass’s quintet and percussion. Come see why they’re the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex’s “premiere brass ensemble.” On July 22, the Hunter Sullivan Big Band will mix it up with an energetic concert featuring originals as well as traditional pop favorites. The last show on July 29 will be a proper send off to the series, featuring the Texas Instruments Jazz Band, a true Texas sized big band now in its 25

The North Texas State Fair & Rodeo, now in its 83rd year, returns to Denton August 19 through 27. The fair celebrates “the cowboy way”, chockfull of great events from horse and livestock shows to bull riding and a parade. Watch the young bucks compete in the 21 and Under Rodeo on August 23 and 24. There will be plenty of competition, with contests, cook-offs and pageants. Plus, children can get into a zone of their own at the Kids Zone, featuring pony rides, a petting zoo and other exciting activities to keep the youngsters busy. Enjoy live musical entertainment from two stages, and of course no fair is complete without a carnival. As the fair’s slogan suggests “It’s Gatherin’ Time”, so round up your family and come on down. Spark your creativity this summer at Art Spark, hosted by the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth on July 30. This free family-oriented festival invites visitors of all ages to express themselves through art activities and enjoy live performances that draw inspiration from the works on display in the special exhibit, Picasso and Braque: The Cubist Experiment, 1910–1912.
