"Scoring With Your Team Goals"
"Scoring With Your Team Goals"
by Mark McGregor

Usually at the end of the year, people and organizations will take the time to review their goals. When I think of team goals, I think of ice hockey. Hockey is known to be the fastest game in the world next to being a business owner! As in any championship hockey team, a successful business will have offense, defense and a goalie. If you are a sole proprietor then you will be all three, which is usually called a utility player. Here is a different way at looking at how your organization can get on the scoreboard!

Your offense
You will need trained and qualified people up front to put the puck in the net. This could be your marketing and sales staff. These players tend to be driven and very focused on getting the job done. This is where you get to put points up on the scoreboard. Your offense is only as strong as your defense.

Your defense
This is whom your competition, clients and prospects face if they can penetrate your offense. Who do you have back there on the blue line guarding your goalie? Even though your defense doesn't score many goals, this position is equally valuable. In your organization, this could be your customer service, human resources, and administration. Your defense is only as strong as your offense.

You are the goalie
As business owner or CEO, you will be the goalie. This position is a one-person position. You are the last opponent that the opposition faces. If your team does well up front, there will be no shots on net. Not only do you stop the other team from scoring, you can also set the pace of the game. One of the greatest achievements that a goalie can do for their team is earn a shutout. That is when a goalie stopped every shoot put to them by not letting the competition score a goal. As your organization's net-minder, are you doing your best for a shutout? Your goalie is only as strong as your team up front.

The team
Everyone on the team has a specific function and understands the other player's function. When putting points up on the board for the team, there is no position more important than the other. Focus on assisting on your team's goals.

Little battles in the corners
It's not that one big goal that wins the game; it's the little battles in the corners that count! Excellent customer service including communications, follow up, and showing that you care is an ongoing process. Don't give up in those corners!
