Maple syrup is essentially Canada in a bottle; the maple leaf adorns both our nation’s flag and the chest of each Toronto hockey player—what could be more Canadian than that? In fact, our country produces 85 percent of the world’s maple syrup, exporting more than 28,685 tonnes of the good stuff every year. In 2004, the industry—comprised of 10,300 maple syrup producers from the east to west coast—was reported to be worth $145 million. So if you’re looking to get in touch with your roots (or your newfound home), or if you’re simply looking for something to do on the weekend, why don’t you visit one of the many maple syrup farms surrounding the GTA?
