New Naming Convention for Unicorn and Hyperion Versions
by John Dickson, Sirsi vice president of Software Development

Unicorn Library Management System

Based on customer feedback and trends in the technology industry, Sirsi has adopted a new version naming policy for the Unicorn® Library Management System and the Hyperion Digital Media Archive. The new policy uses a semi-permanent alpha-based “name,” plus a number for versioning in the future. This will help eliminate confusion with the use of year designations used in the past.

The new alpha name, which will be suffixed to Unicorn and Hyperion, is “GL.” This two-letter designation reflects the new Unicode and Java developments that are of truly “global” significance. As of February 9, 2005, Unicorn version 2005 is now known as Unicorn GL3.0.

The following changes will also take place:

  • Unicorn version 2006 will become Unicorn GL3.1
  • Subsequent versions of Unicorn will be GL3.x, with “x” designating point releases
  • Unicorn GL4 will be the name reserved for the next major Unicorn development

Watch the Client Care Web site for more announcements about the availability of these and future versions of Unicorn and Hyperion.
