- The following librarians at Sirsi libraries were named as Movers & Shakers by Library Journal in its March 15th issue:
- Children's librarians Becky White and Jen McKinney from Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, IN, received Lilly Endowment "Journey Fellowships," which help youth workers come up with new ways of doing youth work within existing programs. (Library Hotline 2/21/2005)
- University of Virginia received the 2005 Excellence in Academic Libraries Award in the university library category from ACRL and Blackwell's Book Services.
- Thirty-two million Americans read blogs (up 58% in 2004). Six million Americans use RSS aggregators to receive news. (Pew Internet & American Life Project Data Memo, January 2005)
- According to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation ("Generation M: Media in the Lives of 8-18 Year-olds"), the following is true about children and teens ages 8-18:
- Teenagers are spending more time using "new media" (computers, Internet, video games) without reducing the time spent on "old media" (TV, print, and music.) They're using more than one medium at a time and cramming more content in the same amount of time.
- Average time spent on reading for pleasure was 43 minutes a day for close to 3 out of 4 people
- 60% do homework while talking on the phone, instant messaging, watching TV, listening to music, or surfing the Web for fun at least some of the time.
