AFCEA Scholarship Winners Are “In the News”

The AFCEA Educational Foundation salutes two recipients of AFCEA scholarships recently featured in their local newspapers. These students epitomize the academic excellence demonstrated by the outstanding applicants who apply for AFCEA scholarships each year.

Army ROTC Cadet Zachary Lewis, a senior physics major at Clarkson University, received a $2,000 AFCEA ROTC scholarship for the second consecutive year. Also selected to participate in the foundation’s inaugural Experience Tour program, Lewis spent one week at the Army Signal Center in Fort Gordon, Georgia. The Experience Tours are sponsored by Future Heroes, a private, nonprofit organization established by Kyle Fisher, president and founder. The Clarkson University newspaper featured Lewis’ accomplishments.

Army ROTC Cadet Zachary Lewis receives his AFCEA ROTC scholarship award from the Clarkson University Army ROTC Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. John Hinrichs, USA, professor of military science.

The Englewood Independent, a Times Community publication covering news in the greater Dayton, Ohio, area, recognized Angela Holmen, a senior chemical engineering major attending the University of Dayton, for receiving the foundation’s Gen. John A. Wickham Scholarship. The article highlighted Holmen’s dual curricula of engineering and performance music with French horn emphasis. She also is a member of the University of Dayton chapter of the Society of Women Engineers, serving as president for both the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 years. The article stated, “During summer of 2007, she worked in an intern program, Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), sponsored by the National Science Foundation and Penn State University. She was one of 15 students selected nationwide for this 10-week program. Holmen also was selected for the REU program in the summer of 2006 and performed research at Purdue University.”

Kathy DeMolet (l), vice president for scholarships, AFCEA Dayton-Wright Chapter, presents the $2,000 Gen. John A. Wickham Scholarship award on behalf of the AFCEA Educational Foundation to Angela Holmen, a student at the University of Dayton.
